It was a rainy day and Don was bored. He didn’t want to play with any of his toys and he was tired of watching TV. Danny was sitting on the couch with Adam, babbling back to him and trying to get him to talk. He wasn’t quite sure where Mac was, but he figured he had to be around somewhere.
“Danny, I’m bored.” He sighed.
“So go play with yer toys.” He suggested.
“I don’t wanna. Can’t we go do something?” He asked.
Danny looked over at Don, still holding Adam in his arms. “Well, it’s rainin’ so we’re not goin’ anywhere.” He said.
Don pouted and got off the couch, searching for Mac. He found him in the bedroom, sitting on the edge of his bed and playing the bass.
“Daddy I’m bored.” He sighed.
Mac looked up and smiled at the boy, watching as he climbed up onto the bed beside him and leaned against his side. “Well, we’re not going anywhere because it’s raining. So we’ll have to find something to do here.” He said, still playing the bass.
Don sighed, pouting. “There’s gotta be somethin’ we can do. It’s not fair that, just ‘cause it’s raining’ we can’t do anything.”
Mac sighed and put his bass down before turning to look at Don. “Well, what do you want to do, then?” He asked.
Don shrugged. “I don’t know. I just don’t want to sit around and do nothing.” He sniffed.
Mac finally understood what the term ‘bored to tears’ meant. Don was clearly at that stage and he pulled the boy into his arms, running his hand over his back. He could hear Danny in the living room with Adam, loud babbling and he carried Don towards them, sitting down on the couch next to his lover.
“Don’s bored.” He said.
“Yeah, I know, he told me about fifteen times.” Danny commented.
“Well you’d be bored too if there was nothing’ at do around here!” Don wailed.
Mac smiled and ran his hand through Don’s hair. “Well… there’s a pool upstairs. We could go swimming.” He suggested.
“I don’t want to do that.” Don sighed, pouting.
“Well, it’s either go swimming’ or sit here an’ be bored.” Danny said.
Looking over at Mac and then Danny, Don nodded. “I guess we can go swimming.” He grunted softly.
“I’ll go get Adam changed into a pair of swimmer diapers an’ you get Don ready. They got change rooms up there or should we change down here?” Danny asked, standing up.
“Probably better to change here. Just keep something on your feet and a shirt over your skin.” Mac suggested.
Danny nodded and carried Adam off, talking to him about going swimming, getting the little boy all excited.
Mac could tell Don was a little unhappy about swimming, but he said nothing as Mac told him to get his trunks on. He just nodded and hopped off the couch.
Getting up as well, Mac headed into his bedroom and changed quickly into his own swim shorts before grabbing a towel for him, Danny and Don.
“Can you take him far a minute so I can get changed?” Danny asked, coming out of the boys’ bedroom.
“Sure. Camera sweetie.” Mac called to Adam.
The baby grinned his toothy grin and babbled, reaching for Mac. They swapped baby for towels and watched Danny head off to get changed before Adam started babbling again, pointing to his trunks.
“Yeah. Did Danny tell you we’re going swimming? Go splash in the water?” Mac asked, kissing his cheek softly.
“Daddy, I can’t tie these shorts!” Don called.
“Well come here and I’ll tie them for you.” Mac called back.
He heard Don huff and smirked as the boy came out and stood in front of him, holding the shorts up. It was the first time he’d really noticed Don’s scar. He was amazed it was still there from that explosion, and it looked even more gruesome on his little body.
Kneeling down, Mac balanced Adam on his knee and reached out, tying up Don’s bathing suit. It was dark blue with white stripes down the side of the legs. It had NYPD spelled out going down the right leg. Even five years old, Don was still proud of the NYPD.
“You three all ready?” Danny asked.
Mac looked over his shoulder at Danny when Don started giggling, and smirked.
“What?” Danny asked, frowning.
“Nothing, Dan. Just… admiring your bathing suit.” Mac teased.
Danny frowned and looked down. He didn’t see what wrong with the trunks. They were his favorite. So what if they were bright pink with white stripes? He liked them.
“Shudder you two. C’mon, let’s go.” He said, smirking.
Mac stood back up and took the towels. There was a little foggy towel for Adam and Mac smiled. He knew they hadn’t bought that, so it must have been Stella. His boys were spoiled. All three of them.
“Take Danny’s hand, Don. And someone remind me I have my keys in my pocket.” Mac said.
Don couldn’t help but laugh at Danny’s bating suit, but took his hand anyway, and they headed out to the elevator. “Danny, didn’t your Mommy tell you pink is for girls?” He snickered.
“Didn’t anyone tell you yer short?” Danny teased.
“I can’t help bein’ short, Danny. But you coulda wore a different color.” He said.
Danny stuck his tongue out at the boy before ruffling his hair. “Manly men c’n wear pink too, Donnie. I’m as manly as they come.” He explained, puffing out his chest.
“You look like you should be a life guard at a gay beach.” Don said, pulling Danny off the elevator.
“Watch you mouth, Don.” Mac frowned.
“What? It’s true!” Don protested.
Mac looked about to say something, but Danny shook his head, picking Don up and resting him on his hip. “S’okay, Mac. He’s lucky he’s cute, ‘er else the claw’d be comin’ ta get him.” Danny said, eyes sliding over to look at Don.
Don just grinned cheekily at him, and Danny raised his free hand, making it into a claw shape. “Oh no! I can’t stop it, Donnie, it’s comin’ ta get ya!” He exclaimed, diving his hand in for Don’s covered belly, tickling him.
Don laughed, trying to push Danny’s hand away and squirming. Mac just shook his head and looked down at Adam. “Those two nuts.” He commented and Adam babbled, laughing.
He opened the door for the swimming pool and let Danny and Don in before losing it behind them. As soon as Danny saw the pool, he stopped tickling.
“Woah. Nice place, don’t ya think, Don?”
“Yeah I guess. For a pool.” He said quietly.
Mac led them over to a row of chairs and put Adam down. He slipped out of his sandals before squatting down and pulling Adam’s shirt up and off. “Don’t move.” He told him, standing up and removing his own.
A loud wolf-whistle made Mac turn, and Danny grinned at him. “What? Yer hot.” He shrugged.
Mac rolled his eyes and picked Adam back up. He didn’t think he was hot stuff. Now Danny, on the other hand, definitely was. He had to clear his throat as Danny took off his shirt and put his glasses down on top of them. His body was lean and muscular and perfectly tanned. He smiled as he watched Danny dive into the water and come up in the middle.
“Water’s perfect! You guys comin’ in or what?” He asked, swimming back.
“What do you think, Don?” Mac asked.
“Yeah. I gotta take off my shirt an’ sandals first though.” He said.
Mac kept an eye on him and when Danny swam closer to the side of the pool, he squat down so Adam was at eye level with the other man. “You comin’ in big man? Gonna come an’ splash in the water?” Danny cooed to Adam.
Adam shrieked happily and reached out for Danny. “You got him?” Mac asked.
“Yup. I got him, don’t I, baby?” Danny smiled. He stayed close to the edge of the pool and made his way over to the shallow end so he could stand up and let Adam splash around.
Mac looked back over at Don, who was fiddling with the drawstring on his swim trunks. “Come on, Don.” He called.
The boy padded after Mac to the shallow end entrance, and waited at the edge as Mac got in. He watched Mac dunk himself briefly under the water before surfacing again and running his hand over the top of his hair.
“Come on, jump in.” Mac said, putting his arms out for Don.
Don eyed the water, before looking over at Mac and shaking his head. “Nuh uh.” He said.
Sighing, Mac leaned on the edge of the pool, crossing his arms on the surface. “What’s wrong?” He asked quietly.
Don whimpered, hugging his arms around himself. “I can’t swim.” He sniffed.
“Hey… Don, look at me. Look at me, sweetheart. I won’t let anything happen to you. I won’t let you go under the water. Now, why don’t you just sit on the edge and put your feet in, and when you’re ready, you can come in further.” Mac said softly.
Don gulped, and wiped at his eyes. He nodded and sat in front of Mac; letting his feet touch the water. It felt nice, and he kicked his legs back and forth on either side of Mac’s chest.
“How much over my head is the water?” He asked.
“Two feet. But I won’t let you go. I can teach you to swim, but I won’t let you go.” He promised.
Don nodded and took in a deep breath. “Okay. I’m ready.” He said.
Mac smiled and reached for Don, picking him up under the arms and holding him on his hip. The water came up to just under Don’s shoulders, and he kept his arms wrapped tightly around Mac’s neck.
“You’re okay. See? I’ve got you.” He soothed, pecking the side of Don’s head.
“Where’s Danny an’ Adam?” Don asked.
“Right here, buddy. You okay?” Danny asked.
“I dunno how to swim.” Don muttered.
“Hey, that’s okay. I didn’t learn how ta swim ‘til I was seven.” Danny shrugged.
“Yeah, but that was different, Danny. You were really a kid. I was thirty an’ I couldn’t swim.” Don pointed out.
Danny shrugged and turned his attention back to Adam, who was happily splashing and babbling away. He was getting everyone wet, and after a while, even Don was giggling, splashing back. Mac was dipping him low into the water, spinning him around which made him laugh even louder.
“Daddy… teach me how to swim!” Don asked.
“Okay. But first, you need to learn how to float. So I want you to lie on your back, hand and feet out. Like a star, okay? I’ve got you, I won’t let you go.” He promised.
Don shook his head and moved slowly into the position Mac had told him about. Keeping his head above the water. Mac made sure that he was confident in his position before slowly moving his hands from Don’s back. The boy was floating on his own and completely relaxed.
“That’s good, Don. Really good, honey.” Mac smiled.
“Yeah? I’m doin’ good?” Don asked.
“Mmhmm. You wanna know something? You’re floating on your own. I’m not touching you and you’re doing such a great job.” He said softly.
Don’s eyes went wide, alarmed and looked over at Mac. The smile on his face made him calm down and Don laughed. “You said you weren’t gunna let me go.” He pointed out.
“Not until you were ready. Now, I want you to roll onto your belly and take my hands. Push yourself so that your head is above water and kick your feet.” He said.
Don nodded and rolled just like Mac had told him. His head went under the water and Mac pulled him up. “You’re okay.” He said, noticing Don’s face crumpling, as if he was going to start crying.
“Yer doin’ great Donnie! Kick yer feet!” Danny called, dipping Adam in and out of the water, making the boy laugh.
Don started kicking his feet and amazed to find that he was keeping his face out of the water all by himself now. Mac continued to teach him the basics of swimming, not letting him go. He was so proud at how well he was doing, considering how scared he had looked earlier.
*
That night, Mac was tucking Don into bed and the boy took his hand. “Thanks, Daddy. For helping me not be afraid of the water.” He said quietly.
“You’re welcome, sweetie. Tomorrow, I’ll ask Stella if she can buy you a lifejacket so you can practice better. And maybe some water wings.” He said.
Don nodded and yawned, curling up on his side. Mac ran his hand through Don’s hair until he was sure the boy was asleep. “Good night Donnie.” He whispered, kissing his forehead.
“Night Daddy. Love you.” Don mumbled.
Mac smiled happily and got off the bed. Adam was still wide-awake in his own toddler bed. There was no way for him to get out, and he would probably fall asleep after a while.
“Good night, Adam. See? Not so bad being a baby again.” He spoke softly.
Adam grabbed for Mac’s hand, babbling and grinning up at him. It was all nonsense, but Adam clearly thought he was saying something very important. So Mac played along, nodding in appropriate spots and acting surprised.
“Dada.” Adam whispered.
Mc’s eyes went wide, really surprised this time and Adam giggled. “Dada!” He called happily.
Mac smiled and leaned down, kissing his forehead. “Sleep tight, baby. Good dreams tonight.” He whispered.
He stayed with Adam for a while longer until the boys’ eyes drooped and he too was asleep. Getting up, Mac left the room, keeping the door open a crack before heading to his own bedroom. Danny was sitting up in the bed, flipping through a book and Mac crawled into the bed beside him.
“They asleep?” Danny asked.
“Mhmm. Me too soon. Those two really wear me out sometimes.” He yawned.
Danny smiled and put his book away before pulling the covers up and over Mac. “Yeah. But you love ‘em. You gotta work tomorrow?” Danny asked, curling into Mac’s said.
“Yeah. Only at my desk though, if the caretakers have any problems with either boy, they can reach me and I’ll be there in seconds.”
“Good. It’s about time you started runnin’ desk. I c’n keep my eye on you; keep you outta trouble.” Danny teased.
Mac huffed a laugh and kissed Danny’s head. “I look forward to it. Night Danny.”
“Night Mac.”
